Frequently asked questions

What Paisewise does today, what it deliberately does not do yet, how your data is handled, and what it costs while it is in beta.

Paisewise is an automatic expense tracker for India. It reads the transaction alert emails your banks, UPI apps and card issuers already send, and turns them into a categorised ledger with monthly trends, per-bank breakdowns, statement reconciliation, and an AI chat over your own transactions. Because we handle financial data, we get a lot of (rightly) careful questions — these are the honest answers, including the ones about features we have not built.

If your question is about a specific area, the deep-dive pages on UPI expense tracking and categories and spend trends go into more detail. Our family expenses and investment tracking pages explain what we plan to build there — neither is in the product today.

What is Paisewise?

Paisewise is an automatic expense tracker built for India. Indian banks, UPI apps and card issuers already email you a transaction alert for nearly every payment; Paisewise reads those alerts and turns them into a categorised spending ledger with monthly trends, per-bank breakdowns, and an AI chat that answers questions about your own transactions. The web app is live today.

Is Paisewise free?

Paisewise is free while it is in beta. Paid plans may come later; if they do, prices and plan features will be shown before you pay, and the refund terms are in our terms of service.

Which banks and cards does Paisewise support?

Paisewise reads transaction alert emails from major Indian issuers including HDFC, ICICI, Axis, SBI, SBI Card, Kotak, IDFC FIRST, Yes Bank, IndusInd, American Express India, OneCard and HSBC India. Known alert formats are parsed with built-in templates, and anything unrecognised falls back to an AI extraction step. Paisewise does not connect to bank accounts — it only reads the alerts those banks send you.

Do I need to share my net-banking username or password?

No. Paisewise never asks for net-banking credentials, a UPI PIN, or a card PIN, and there is no bank account to link. You sign in with Google and grant read-only access to the transaction alert mail in your inbox. Paisewise cannot send, delete or modify mail, cannot move money, and you can revoke access from your Google account at any time.

Which platforms is Paisewise available on?

The web app is live and open to everyone — sign in with Google and start. Android and iOS apps exist but are in a private beta with a limited number of seats; you can leave your email on the homepage to be notified when a seat opens. You do not need the mobile beta to use the web app.

Does Paisewise connect to my bank accounts through Account Aggregator?

No. Account Aggregator connections are not built. Paisewise has no live link to your accounts and cannot see balances — everything it knows comes from the transaction alert emails your bank and card issuers already send. Regulated read-only account links are on our roadmap, but they are not in the product today.

Can I track family or household expenses with Paisewise?

Not today. A shared family or HUF household view is on our roadmap, but it does not exist in the product yet. Paisewise currently tracks the transactions in one signed-in account, from the alerts that reach that inbox.

Can Paisewise track investments like mutual funds, stocks, FDs or PPF?

No. Paisewise tracks spending only. Mutual funds, stocks, fixed deposits, PPF and a combined net-worth view are on our roadmap and are not part of the product today.

How does Paisewise track UPI spending automatically?

A UPI payment made from Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or a bank app still debits a bank account, and the bank emails a transaction alert for it. Paisewise reads that alert, so the spend is captured no matter which UPI app you paid from — no manual entry, no screenshots, no SMS forwarding.

Can I change how a transaction is categorised?

Yes. Paisewise ships with built-in categories and lets you create your own. You can recategorise a single transaction or a batch of them, and the change persists — it is your ledger, not a fixed classification.

What if my bank never emailed an alert for something?

You can upload a bank or credit card statement PDF. Paisewise reads it and reconciles it against the transactions it already extracted from alerts, so gaps get filled and nothing is double-counted. If you would rather not connect any mailbox at all, you can work from statement PDFs alone.

What can the AI chat do?

You can ask questions about your own transactions in plain language — for example "how much did I spend on food in June?" or "what did I pay on my ICICI card last month?" — and the answer is computed from your ledger. It is not generic money advice, and Paisewise is not a financial or tax adviser.

Is my financial data safe with Paisewise?

Access is read-only and scoped to transaction alert mail from known bank and card-issuer senders, not your personal conversations. Paisewise cannot move money and we do not sell your data. Our privacy policy sets out exactly what is stored, how long it is kept, and how to delete it.

Can I export my data for taxes or record-keeping?

Paisewise organises your spending inside the app today. Dedicated tax or filing exports are not available. Because extraction depends on the emails your bank sends, you should not treat Paisewise as the sole record for taxes or disputes.

How is Paisewise different from other expense trackers?

Most trackers ask you to link an account or type every payment in. Paisewise starts from a source Indian households already have — the transaction alerts their banks and cards send — so the ledger fills itself in with no linking and no data entry. It is rupee-first, built around Indian issuer alert formats, and honest about the parts that are not built yet.
